GCE Project 2026 – Czechia Summer Exchange
Fresh off their flights to Prague, the GCE Project 2026 winners kicked off their exchange with a warm welcome orientation. Fueled by the excitement of discovering a new city, they hit the streets together on the second day for their very first adventure.
Stepping Into Living History in Prague
Walking toward the National Museum, every turn felt like moving through the pages of history as they passed iconic landmarks like the Astronomical Clock, St. Nicholas Church, the Powder Tower, and vibrant Wenceslas Square. With every step, it felt as if they were moving through living history.
The journey continued through Old Town Square, following the legendary Royal Route across Charles Bridge and up to Prague Castle. Here, the group didn’t just sightsee—they learned, reflected, and truly connected with the rich heritage behind the stone walls.
The adventure reached its most rewarding moment. During a short hike to the Petřín Lookout Tower, they were treated to breathtaking panoramic views of Prague—a perfect pause to take in the skyline and feel truly part of the journey.
Royal Fortresses & Wilderness Trails
The group visited to Karlštejn Castle, the impenetrable 14th-century fortress built by King Charles IV to safeguard the crown jewels.
After exploring the castle, the group set off through the forest for their first major hike toward Velká Amerika (Quarry Great America). Coming out of the woods to stand at the edge of this sheer limestone canyon with turquoise waters below was nothing short of magic.
Leaving behind the urban bustle of central Prague, the students embarked on a journey to explore the surrounding historic towns and scenic destinations.
Czech Railways & Tábor
The students began with an exclusive presentation by Czech Railways, learning how the train network connects cities, supports tourism, and facilitates daily travel for work and study. The highlight of the experience was visiting the control panel for a firsthand look at the precision technology keeping the system running smoothly. They also discovered how trains have shaped the country’s history and development, making their upcoming journey to the historic city of Tábor feel even more meaningful.
Exploring Kutná Hora
The group spent the day in Kutná Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage town famous for its rich silver mining history. The visit included a trip to the Museum of Silver, an authentic tour of a historic underground mine, and a stop at the iconic St. Barbara’s Cathedral.
Harrachov
On the longest drive of the trip, the team headed to Harrachov in the Krkonoše Mountains—the highest range in the Czech Republic. Famous for its glassmaking heritage, the town gave students an up-close look at the craft as they explored the Museum of Glass and saw expert artisans in action at an active glass factory. Afterward, they enjoyed a scenic walk to the Mumlava Waterfalls.
