Every year AFS receives secondary-school-age exchange students from around the world for cultural exchanges. This 10-month program will allow overseas exchange students to interact with local students and families, thereby enhancing their understanding and experience of local culture.

Like other local students, exchange students will also study in secondary schools and participate in various cultural and community activities. While they are in Hong Kong, they need local families who are open and receptive to foreign cultures to provide accommodation and care on a voluntary basis. These local families are called the AFS Host Families.

Requirement of an AFS Host Family

Most local households share a small apartment, and many people mistakenly consider themselves ineligible to be a host family. In fact it is the following qualities that we look for in potential host families:

  • Care and receptiveness;

  • Support and openness of each family member to the idea of receiving a foreign student;

  • Willingness to provide food and bed (no extra room is necessary) during the exchange period (from August to July); and

  • Willingness to provide care and life guidance for the exchange student.
